WINCH DESIGN: DIFFERENT STROKES

Winch Design has reimagined a Global 5000 using the late Kazuo Shiraga’s bold style as inspiration.

With their predominately white interior panelling, private jet interiors are the ultimate blank canvas. Commonly, it’s the seats, carpet and textiles that get a splash of colour, but for this Bombardier Global 5000, Winch Design was tasked with adding a Zen-like ambience to the ten-year-old cabin.

KAZUO SHIRAGA

The client brief was to take the dated original cabin and create a bright and characterful space, personal to the client. Winch looked to the East for inspiration, using the unmistakable style of the late Japanese painter Kazuo Shiraga as inspiration. Abstract artist and first-generation member of the postwar artists collective known as Gutai, Shiraga was best known for his unique style of painting with his feet and his work often featured gestural, expressive brushstrokes and a focus on physicality and movement. He also experimented with using non-traditional tools and materials in his paintings and is considered an important contribution to the development of contemporary art in Japan.

THE CENTREPIECE

From the moment you step on board, the aft bulkhead’s commissioned art piece catches the eye and is the focal point of the concept. Staying true to Shiraga’s style, the feature was directly painted onto the aircraft bulkhead, using fully certified materials. Bold strokes, strong colours and abstract details bring life to the Owner’s Lounge, adding an unmistakable ambience that sets a new standard for cabin creativity.

CABIN EQUANIMITY

Although the art installation was challenging, the rest of the Global’s cabin was more straightforward. As the bulkhead artwork is visible throughout the cabin, it was important to choose a colourway that would allow it to pop. Subtle earth tones combine with the geometric shapes in the custom tufted carpet to create movement, while the seats themselves have been re-styled using high quality leathers to introduce a distinctly fresh and lighter feel to the cabin.

Swiss efficiency: The AeroVisto team handled the interior cabin refurbishment.

Aircraft interior solutions service provider AeroVisto in Switzerland was trusted with the cabin refurbishment and the aircraft was completed with the interior installation and maintenance by Bombardier UK.

Summing up the project, Jim Dixon, Managing Partner and Creative Director, Yachts & Aviation said: “The Winch Design team thoroughly enjoyed the fast turnaround of this bespoke interior refit. The art installation on the aft bulkhead presented several technical challenges, but the finished result creates a great impression!”.
